The remains of Prof Dora Akunyili arrived Nigeria on Monday from Dubai.
Her body which was accompanied from Mumbai by her husband and two sons in a chartered flight, touched down at the tarmac of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport at about 5:30pm.
Many friends and family members were on hand to receive the corpse, including the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Dr Peter Obi and Minister of State for Environment.
Prof Akunyili died on the 7th of this month at the age of 59 of what family reports described as uterine cancer.
She died almost a year from the battle with the deadly disease which reports say was a case of initial misdiagnosis.
Her remains was later deposited at the National Hospital, Abuja in a Turkish hospital Ambulance.
Immediately after depositing the body, family members went to the Abuja residence of the Akunyilis to begin meeting for the preparation of the burial ceremonies.
The spokesperson of the NH, Dr. Tayo Haastrup, admitted that the body the former Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, arrived the Hospital between 7:30 and 8:00 pm.
He said, “The corpse of Akunyili is with us and has been deposited at the National Hospital morgue.”
