Education takes priority in Nigerian Navy –FOC

The Nigerian Navy has said it has prioritised education in its welfare schools in line with the Federal Government’s transformation agenda and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Ilesanmi Alade, who made the assertion, said Nigerian Navy schools were constantly monitored and given the best attention in terms of human and material resources.
He spoke during a one-day seminar on the principles of effective and participatory management for the Nigerian Navy Welfare Schools, organised by the Directorate of Naval Education, explaining that the naval leadership believed in quality education for children in its schools. He urged parents and teachers to assist the force to achieve its set goals.
Admiral Alade, who was represented by the Chief Staff Officer, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ofik, called on teachers, educationists, parents and guardians to imbibe the culture of realism, pragmatism and participatory management skills, and ideas to improve the standard and quality of education in its schools.
In her lecture, the Chief Inspector of Education at the Directorate of Naval Education, Mrs. Bamijoko Olotu, lamented the attitude of teachers towards teaching and impacting knowledge to the younger generation.
She urged teachers to improve themselves by reading so that they would be effective.
Similarly, Dr. Celine Njoku, a counselling psychologist, advised parents to always themselves available for the Parent-Teacher Association meeting of the school.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Ojo, Navy Captain A. Ahmed, said no nation could rise above the standards of its teachers, adding that the seminar was organised to improve the standard of education in the country.
The Director of Naval Education, Commodore James Edako, said the seminar would be held in all the areas where the Nigerian Navy had its welfare schools. The seminar, he said was designed to promote excellence in the operations of schools.
